A new study says eating avocados as part of a regular daily diet can significantly cut the risk of developing serious heart diseases.

Avocados are rich in nutrients and contain a high amount of monosaturated fatty acids. Previous studies suggest avocados can lower cholesterol.

This new study, however, marks the first time health benefits from this dense fruit has gone beyond monosaturated fatty acids.

According to Penny Kris-Etherton, Distinguished Professor of Nutrition at Pennsylvania State University, one avocado each day when eaten as part of a moderate-fat, cholesterol lowering diet can lower the effects of cardiovascular diseases as opposed to not eating one with a moderate-fat diet.

Dr. Kris-Etherton and her team conducted three tests involving three different diets all designed to lower cholesterol. These tests included a lower fat diet, one that consists of 24 percent fat and two moderate fat diets that involve 34 percent fat.

The researchers had 45 healthy yet overweight adults between the ages of 21 to 70 follow these diets. All three diets yielded results that significantly lowered the participants' LDL (low density lipoprotein), otherwise known as bad cholesterol, as well as total body cholesterol.

Participants who showed an even more lower cholesterol count especially in their LDL levels and total cholesterol were the ones on the avocado diet as opposed to the other diets.

To be more precise, the avocado diet decreased bad cholesterol by 13.5 mg/dL while the other diets lowered the bad cholesterol by 8.3 mg/dL and by 7.4 mg/dL respectively.

This study was published in the Journal of the American Heart Association.
