LaCie has jumped on the launch of the new 12-inch MacBook featuring one of the first USB-C ports by launching its own external hard-drive with a USB-C connector.

Named the Porsche Design USB-C, it also features a silver exterior that matches with the 12-inch MacBook's brushed aluminum finish. The external hard drive will also work with other computers since USB-C supports almost every type of port.

LaCie will offer the external hard drive in 500 GB, 1 TB or 2 TB options. No word on the price or release date for the product.

Backing USB-C is one of the first signs of Apple trying to integrate with open standards instead of launching yet another Lightning or Thunderbolt cable for everyone to be upset about. Apple also open sourced ResearchKit, its new software framework for medical research.

USB-C looks to be the global standard for most machines within the next few years considering it can be engineered to work as the main charging port, alongside a USB, DisplayPort, VGA and HDMI port.

Conversation on Apple's MacBook seems to center around the one port for all external needs. Some say it isn'ts enough for most Mac owners that like to have more than one thing plugged in at a time.

Apple tried to downplay this at the event earlier this week, claiming new wireless services like iCloud, AirDrop and AirPlay will fill the wired gaps that usually go to HDMI and USB.

It might still be a burden for people working online, especially if they want to leech power to charge their iPhone, play something to a TV without smart functionality or keep an external hard drive plugged in and also charge the MacBook.
