Tesla Motors CEO Elon Musk is hinting at an OTA (over the air) update to end range anxiety that will be announced at a conference on March 19.

The update will come to the entire Model S fleet and isn't the first software update to impact performance of the car. Tesla is showing it's committed to bumping-up performance even after two years of Model S sales.

Range anxiety on electric cars is a serious issue and one Tesla has been trying to address through optimizations to battery life and the launch of Superchargers worldwide, or free charging stations for electric car drivers.

Still, there are serious worries that going on long trips on an electric car isn't feasible due to constraints in charging. This new software update might add even more electric efficiency by giving more mileage to the same battery.

It might also allow users to quickly swap out the battery on the Model S. Customers will be able to buy battery packs from Tesla, and when going on long trips keep a secondary battery ready if the primary one fails and there is no electric charging station.

This could be a huge boon for Model S owners that are still worried 400 miles isn't enough. Tesla is working hard to launch more Supercharging stations in the U.S., alongside investing in a Gigafactory for more battery availability.
