Faster Melting Arctic will Cause More Intense Summer Heat Waves

Researchers from Germany have announced the U.S. and Europe (including Russia) will experience longer heat waves this year since the summer winds that bring cooler ocean breezes have weakened due to climate change.

Researchers from the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research announced in a report last March 12 that this rapid Arctic warming apparently disrupts the air streams that significantly reduce summer storms. The result leads to more heat waves.

This change in summer weather damaged crops in Russia in 2010, destroyed harvests and caused more wildfires.

According to study co-author of the, Jascha Lehmann, climate change can weaken summer circulation patterns and can aggravate the occurrence of heat waves. The warm temperatures today are just telltale signs of the beginning of this hotter summer.

These unusual summer heat waves are also caused by gases that trap heat from burning oil, coal and natural gas, which will lead to a 6.5 degrees Fahrenheit increase in temperature by the end of century, said the International Energy Agency.

This has been the most rapid climate shift in about 10,000 years. This temperature spike can disrupt air flows and even significantly affect storm activity, according to the report.

When the massive air streams found in the sky are disturbed by climate change, the effects on the ground will become severe, according to lead author of the study Dim Coumou.

Data used for this study was gathered from Northern Hemisphere atmospheric circulation beginning 1979 to 2013.

Temperatures rise faster, especially near the melting ice caps, that's why warming in the Arctic can narrow temperature differences and weaken this jet stream or the air movement pivotal in transforming the planet's weather.

Coumou also adds that this day to day, the variability scientists have observed causes the weather to be more persistent. The results are heat extremes during monthly timelines. With the Arctic warming, this high impact heat wave is most likely to increase.
