Tesla Motors announced the industry's "most advanced" autopilot platform at a conference on Thursday that allows Model S owners to summon their car and set it to auto-drive on highways.

It's the first sign of driverless cars although owners will still need to be ready to take over the vehicle. It's not clear if Tesla will be able to implement this software update on the full Model S fleet since some automotive regulators might block the autonomous update.

Some states have approved the use of self-driving vehicles but this is for testing and not consumer ownership. Tesla has commented on the worry that this update will be blocked, stating the Model S has no feature currently banned by regulatory authorities.

Autopilot is featured on some cars already but this normally alerts the driver if his hand lets go of the wheel for longer than half a minute. Tesla's new autopilot system should allow the driver to go completely hands-free for most of the ride.

The feature announcement comes just a few days after Tesla Motors CEO Elon Musk claimed the future of car driving is in jeopardy due to self-driving safety features that will become prevalent in the next few years.

On top of the autopilot mode, the new software update will also allow users to set a trip and get a route where electric charging stations can be found, ending the "range anxiety" some electric car owners show.

The map will feature SuperCharger and regular electric charging stations. Musk claims a Model S owner will need try to not get a route not longer than 250 miles, which is the Model S' current range.

No word on the Model X's launch date, but Tesla did show the future of the autopilot today. It will be available this summer to all the Model S owners.
