Apple Planning iPod Touch Revamp Later This Year

(Photo : Apple) Apple is planning a relaunch of the iPod Touch this year, according to new reports.

Apple is planning to release a new iPod Touch this year with the upcoming launch of Beats Music in June aiming to get people back into music.

Not much is known about the revamp but it likely will retain the design of the 2012 iPod Touch, which is a thinner and lighter version of the iPhone 5 with multiple colors similar to the iPhone 5C.

The internals will be upgraded with an A7 processor, more storage and a new iSight camera. We expect Apple will also upgrade the networking to include dual-band Wi-Fi ac and potentially LTE like the iPad.

We hope Apple will focus on audio quality for the iPod Touch, allowing users to have a real reason other than affordability to pay for the iPod over the iPhone. If we had some audio quality from Beats, like HTC has on the One M9, it would go a long way to redefining the iPod Touch's place in the world.

Adding Beats headphones might also be a good way to draw customers to the iPod Touch. Even though Beats might not be the connoisseurs of audio quality, they're a fat lot better than the Apple headphones packaged into the iPhone.

All of that, alongside a free few months of Beats Music when it launches in June, and Apple might give customers a good reason to pick up the iPod Touch instead of one of Apple's other products.

The big question is why would Apple want customers to buy the iPod Touch. It's a cheaper and essentially less used version of the iPhone, meaning less profit for the company and fewer features for the customer.

Unless Apple plans on making the iPod Touch as expensive as the iPhone -- which we cannot see happening -- it means Apple either sees the iPod as a real product for the future or wants nostalgia to kick in and bring a large amount of sales.

Either way, re-announcing the iPod Touch after three years is an odd move without some backing from Beats, and a big emphasis on music storage, music streaming and audio quality being better on the iPod than it is on the iPhone.

We'll have to see. It's likely Apple will announce the iPod Touch at WWDC 2015 to commemorate the launch of Beats Music although it will probably be available later in the year alongside the iPhone and iPad.
