Apple Watch Time Apps Banned From Store

(Photo : Reuters) Apple is starting to ban apps that show the time on the Apple Watch.

When Apple launched iOS 8, it promoted third-party developers and claimed it would open up its platform to accommodate deeper integration. This was one of the first times Apple had been open with outside developers, instead of creating barriers to ensure its walled garden was safe.

It looks like those same barriers it removed on iOS 8 are being added back to the Apple Watch, with the company even going as far as banning apps that "make fart noises" or tell the time.

Even though the first ban is nonsensical, the second is rather bothersome for developers that want to make more appealing and custom watch-faces. It is surprising Apple is not allowing developers to add better watch-faces, considering Android Wear already has dozens of brilliantly designed watch-faces from manufacturers and developers.

It is also surprising because watch-faces can be uniquely personal, similar to a phone wallpaper. Apple has missed an opportunity to allow developers and media fans to create custom watch-faces that may only appeal to a select few customers, like an image of Drogon from Game of Thrones, or Kandinsky artwork, alongside personal watch-faces from Facebook photos.

These barriers and banned items and starting to tally up, but the question is how restrictive will Apple be in the next version of the Apple Watch? Will we see some of these banned items lifted, and how far will Apple allow developers to delve into the Watch platform.

Apple managed to sell two million Apple Watch units through pre-orders, higher than the numbers expected from Cupertino. It plans on selling 26 million units by the end of the year, with orders piling up in the nine countries the Apple Watch originally launched in.

Global expansion to the tier two list of countries will happen next month, even with stock on a waiting list until June in most countries, with some models set back until July. Apple is working with its partners LG Display to make sure there is enough supply to supplement 2 - 3 million units per month.

Apple reported a decent quarter earlier this week, citing 61 million iPhone sales and an increase in Mac sales year-on-year. The iPad is still a bummer for Apple's portfolio, and it didn't mention the Apple Watch.
