British world champion Amir Khan said that a fight with Floyd Mayweather Jr. is highly likely this coming September, but he will not chase it anymore like he had done before, according to Sumeet Paul of Fanatix.

Khan, the current WBC Silver Welterweight champion, said that he will just "keep on fighting and if it comes, it comes," as reported by Boxing Scene's Edward Chaykovsky.

The 28-year-old Khan is set to defend his title against American Chris Algieri in a scheduled 12-round fight that will highlight a Premier Boxing Champions card at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn on May 29.

"I want to focus on Chris Algieri right now but I really think it can happen," Khan said, referring to the possible fight with the pay-per-view king, and potentially will be his biggest income to date as well.

Khan used to sit out opportunities to fight other big name boxers in the past just to have the chance to fight Mayweather. And while he did that, other fighters had become busy building a name for themselves, such as Argentina's Marcos Maidana. He may have already learned his lesson right now as he even considers pushing through with his religious practices even when the Mayweather fight is in September, according to Bad Left Hook's Wil Esco.

"I think I can do the September fight if it happens. It gives me enough time to do my Ramadan and fasting - and then go into training camps for nine to 10 weeks," Khan said.

Khan is a devout Muslim and a member of the Naqshbandi Sufi Order.
