NBA Free-Agency Rumors: Dallas Pursues JaVale McGee

After DeAndre Jordan changed his mind and decided to stay with the Los Angeles Clippers, the Dallas Mavericks were left flabbergasted with a seven-foot gaping hole in the middle of their roster. One of Mark Cuban's targets to fill that void is former Nuggets center JaVale McGee.

RealGM reported that talks between the Mavs and McGee on a potential signing opened up through the weekend. Other reports have indicated that if the 27-year-old seven-footer could attest to Cuban and head coach Rick Carlisle that he is indeed injury-free and could stay healthy for at least a season, then the deal would be almost done.

McGee is anticipated to fill the backup center spot with his versatility, shot-blocking, and defensive tendencies. Some analysts believe that the former Nevada standout would be a huge risk because of his widely-known displays of inconsistencies and poor basketball IQ in the past.

Dallas had already acquired veteran Georgian-Turkish center Zaza Pachulia, who most probably would become their starting center, in a trade with the Milwaukee Bucks last week, but the management was said to be not done in trying to prepare the team for the rougher Western Conference waters.

The Mavs are reportedly looking to add "more athleticism and rim protection to its frontcourt rotation", as per ESPN, and they were to hunt down anyone who has the potential to fill those needs.

At present, Dallas is also considering 13-year vet Samuel Dalembert and the young Kevin Séraphin who are both free agents and still without a team. Dalembert was waived by the New York Knicks in January of this year while Séraphin became a free agent just this July.

The team also reached an agreement with three-time NBA All-Star Deron Williams to boost their backcourt. According to the Dallas Morning News, the Mavs are set to "upgrade their roster" when the two-time Olympian finally joins the team as their new starting point guard.

Williams, 31, was once deemed as a top three player at his position, but nagging injuries and an inappropriate playing environment kept him from reaching his true potential. With the opportunity to play for his hometown, many basketball experts are expecting a complete career turnaround.

Overall, it was still a productive offseason for Cuban and the Mavs even though they got yanked by the double-minded Jordan.
