While most of the high-impact free agents were already signed this summer, one of the few ones left is former Slam Dunk Contest champion Josh Smith.

The 11-year veteran had not yet re-signed with the Houston Rockets and there were rumors that several NBA teams are interested in acquiring his services including the Los Angeles Clippers and Sacramento Kings, according to Bleacher Report.

It seems like Doc Rivers and the Clippers are not yet finished with their offseason melodrama as the team was reportedly vociferous of their desire to snatch Smith from free agency.

Rant Sports indicated that the former All-Defensive Second Team player is "a perfect fit" in L.A. as a backup to fellow high-flying power forward Blake Griffin. The 29-year-old will be able to provide the Clips the frontcourt depth that they sorely lacked throughout the years.

However, rumors have emerged that the likeliest to sign Smith this offseason are the Kings, who is the team that can provide him with the most money.

Houston and Los Angeles could only pay Smith about $2.8 million because of cap issues, but Sacramento could offer him more than the $5 million that the Detroit Pistons owed him for this coming season.

With George Karl at the helm and DeMarcus Cousins and Rajon Rondo as his top players, Smith could thrive with the Kings' offense. Smith could start or come off the bench behind Rudy Gay or incoming rookie Willie Cauley-Stein as the team would become instantly loaded up front with him in the lineup.

Sports World Report said that one possible issue that the Clippers are going to have with Smith is how to find enough playing time for him especially after they added Paul Pierce, Lance Stephenson, and Wesley Johnson this summer.

Exclusively playing behind Griffin would certainly not give him enough minutes as the five-time All-Star is averaging more than 35 minutes a game his whole career. Perhaps if Rivers would go small ball and slide Griffin at five so Smith could play at four while DeAndre Jordan is resting on the bench, then it could work out.

Smith averaged 12 points, 6 rebounds, and 2.6 assists in 25.5 minutes per game as a backup for Houston last season. His stellar play helped the Rockets reach the Western Conference Finals where the team ultimately bowed down to eventual champions Golden State Warriors.
