Activision said most of the lost users came from Asia.

In its latest financial report, Activision said the drop in users is "seasonal" and noted it was similar to the performance of the game in April through June in 2012. The dip in players two years ago came just before the launch of the "Mists of Pandaria," an expansion pack of the game.

"Warlords of Draenor" is the next expansion set for the MMO and is set to be released for PCs in the fall. The specific release date for the supplement will be revealed in a special event scheduled for Aug. 14 in Los Angeles.

Although the expansion pack has not yet been released, Activision Blizzard said it has already sold 1.5 million in pre-purchases.

Income from "World of Warcraft" is increasing in spite of the decreasing number of players, said Blizzard Entertainment chief executive Mike Morhaime.

Activision Blizzard also revealed that one of its other games, "Diablo III," has sold over 20 million units. The number encompasses sales of "Diablo III" and its expansion, "Reaper of Souls."

The expansion was the top game for the PC from April through June in terms of revenues earned in Europe and North America.

The stand-alone "Diablo III" was released on May 15, 2012, exclusively to the PC.

The console versions for the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 were released a year later on Sept. 3. The game will be ported to the Xbox One and PlayStation 4 on Aug. 19 as the "Ultimate Evil Edition."
