The Tampa Bay Buccaneers re-signed defensive end Da'Quan Bowers four days into training camp after releasing him last March as the team felt the need to add depth on the position as they prepare for the new season.

NBC Sports Pro Football Talk reported that after a busy offseason, the Bucs may have realized the need for another defensive end to boost their current roster and decided to get back Bowers for a one-year contract at an undisclosed amount.

No other NFL team had shown interest in acquiring Bowers during the whole summer and so the team did not hesitate to bring him back up for another chance.

Even though the 6-foot-4, 288-pound South Carolina native did not play up to par during his entire four-year career in Tampa Bay, Bucs management may have thought that it is still better to hire someone that is already familiar not only with head coach Lovie Smith's playbook but also to the team's culture and values in particular.

Bowers was drafted 51st overall by Tampa Bay in the second round of the 2011 NFL Draft. He started in 10 of the 50 games he appeared in the past four seasons but had only seven sacks to show for it while still earning a total of $3.85 million in the process.

The Tampa Bay Times mentioned that the team was "hoping Bowers will provide some depth to a defensive line that lacks a proven edge rusher." The one bright side about the former Clemson standout is that he is versatile enough to alternate at the defensive tackle spot.

ESPN's Pat Yasinskas noted that the Buccaneers had actually been trying to give Bowers a starting spot the past couple of years, but his performance was just not enough for the coaches to go on that route.

Yasinskas also said that even though Bowers was re-hired, he will not be a shoo-in for a roster spot. The 25-year-old is set to compete with the Bucs' other defensive linemen such as George Johnson, Larry English, William Gholston, Jacquies Smith, and Lawrence Sidbury. However, with Bowers' experience, he reportedly has a decent chance of making it in the final lineup.
