Eric Berry, the Kansas City Chiefs safety who was diagnosed with Hodgkin lymphoma last year, has been cleared by doctors to play and is going back to the football field to join the Chiefs training camp this summer, according to ESPN.

Berry received a lymphoma diagnosis when a lump was found in his chest following a defeat against the Oakland Raiders in November. The mass was discovered after he complained of severe chest pains. The finding forced him to step away from football to focus on his treatment and recovery.

The 26-year-old former Tennessee standout went through chemotherapy and radiation sessions in his home state of Atlanta and stayed private about the whole ordeal during the whole period. He got out once, though, attending one spring practice of his old college team.

Eight months later, after a series of tests that drew positive results, he was medically allowed to return to the sport and rejoin the Chiefs. Berry will meet fellow teammates that had just gone through setbacks and injuries for a minicamp starting Wednesday before their actual training camp on Saturday.

However, Yahoo Sports indicated that while Berry was allowed to practice, he was not clear to play a pro game yet, according to head coach Andy Reid.

Nevertheless, it is still a welcome news to the management, coaching staff, players, and fans of the Chiefs that the three-time Pro Bowler is literally up and running and enthusiastic of giving his best during camp.

An outpour of support and well wishes came out in social media after the NFL announced Berry's return and news about it went out to the public, as per the league's official website.

NFL fans, players, and executives celebrated The Fifth Dimension's win over cancer, although the battle is not yet over as he continues to receive treatments and attend checkups at the moment.

The 2013 First Team All-Pro player has been considered as one of the best safeties in the league before his cancer diagnosis. He recorded 289 tackles, 5.5 sacks, 31 passes defended, 8 interceptions, and 3 touchdowns in his five-year career in Kansas City. Berry played just one game in the entire 2011 season because of a left knee ACL injury.
