The Dallas Cowboys' starting cornerback Brandon Carr had broken his right hand in training camp on Saturday, which reportedly would require surgery to repair.

The procedure is scheduled this Monday, but Dallas head coach Jason Garett said there was no definite timetable yet on how long the seven-year pro will be sidelined before he can return to the field.

Carr was reportedly optimistic that he would be able to recover fast and come back to the team in the soonest time possible, as per the Dallas Morning News.

"I'm going to take care of it then come back and take it day by day," Carr said. "I'm going to listen to my trainers and coaches and be smart."

Garrett was also hopeful about his star cornerback's condition, saying that the damage was not too serious and that it was "a similar injury to what DeMarco Murray had last year when he played in the game, four or five days later," as per ESPN.

The coach emphasized, though, that the surgery must be done soon and precisely to begin the healing of the incision without taking too much time.

Carr said that he did not realize the bone of his right hand was broken as he thought he only "cracked his knuckles" during practice. It was not until after the training session that the former Grand Valley State standout discovered that it was chinked.

The 29-year-old Michigan native is not expected to play in all of the team's preseason games because of the injury, starting with their first this Thursday versus the San Diego Chargers, although Garrett revealed that he was going to save Carr for the regular season anyway.

Bleacher Report indicated that the fifth round pick in the 2008 NFL Draft was not particularly injury-prone throughout his career as he never missed a regular season game since his rookie year with the Kansas City Chiefs.

The team is reportedly holding out the option of acquiring an additional cornerback in case Carr was not able to come back on their Monday night season opener against the New York Giants on September 13 as Garrett was reportedly confident that he will be back by that time.
