New York Giants quarterback Eli Manning reportedly seeks to become the highest-paid NFL player in history as the ongoing contract negotiations between the two parties reach fever pitch, according to ESPN.

This means that the Giants must pay him an annual average salary of more than $22 million, the stipend of Green Bay Packers' quarterback Aaron Rodgers, which is the current league record.

Rodgers was a Super Bowl champion and MVP in 2010 while Manning did the same thing twice in 2007 and 2011.

Just recently, the Seattle Seahawks have extended the contract of their own Super Bowl champion but not MVP signal caller, Russell Wilson, giving him a yearly compensation of $21.9 million. It made Wilson the second highest-paid player in league history.

The 34-year-old Manning, who is the younger brother of another outstanding quarterback Peyton Manning of the Denver Broncos, is entering the final year of his current six-year, $97.5 million contract that pays him an average of $16.25 million annually.

The New York Daily News indicated that the Giants reportedly want to give the 11-year pro an extension and keep him for the long term. Owner John Mara said that they want to come up with a new deal before the new season starts in September.

"We're going to try to lock him up," said Mara. "We're still having discussions with his agent and our goal is to still try to reach a contract with him, hopefully before the regular season starts or as soon thereafter as possible. There is no deadline on it right now."

Speculations were out that while Manning was said to be requesting that big of an amount, the Giants management was "offering significantly less", although it is more likely not lower than the three-time Pro Bowler's present remuneration.

Yahoo Sports suggested that while Manning was no longer the player that he was before, he still has a lot left in his tank to contend for a title. He also had managed to stay away from any injuries in eleven seasons, which makes his value a certainty for New York.

Manning's agent, Tom Condon, also said that his client is the best player to manage the pressure and scrutiny that comes with dealing with the New York media.
