NBA News & Rumors: J.R. Smith Back With The Cavs For Less Money

Streak shooter J.R. Smith eventually re-signed with the Cleveland Cavaliers after opting out the final year of the three-year, $18 million deal he had when he was still with the New York Knicks that would have earned him $6.4 million next season.

The Cavs offered him $10 million for two years with a player option for the second year and the 2013 NBA Sixth Man of the Year awardee accepted. The contract also included a capacity for the 11-year pro to refuse any trade that would involve him this coming season, which was the same with his teammates LeBron James, Matthew Dellavedova, and James Jones.

ESPN noted that Smith opted out of his contract in June to test free-agency waters come July, but the experiment completely backfired as there were no teams who showed interest in the mercurial 29-year-old shooting guard.

There were a few offers here and there but was much lower than the $6.4 million he had. After more than two months of seeking more money, he ended up taking more than a million less per year from the same team he left to be able to stay in the NBA.

Smith was an integral part of the Cavs roster last season, especially in the playoffs when their two of the Big Three superstars Kevin Love and Kyrie Irving went down with injuries. He averaged 12.8 points, 4.7 rebounds, and 1.2 assists in 31.1 minutes per game during the playoffs as one of King James' gritty henchmen.

The Washington Post said that it was "really not such a bad turn of events for Smith" as he still ended up playing in the world's richest pro league and would still have the opportunity to build up his stock and win a championship with arguably the greatest player in the world right now.

If the former St. Benedict's Prep high school stalwart could perform excellently this season, then he may have a shot to the sizable contract he had been dreaming of next year when the league's salary cap increases.

LeBron was the first teammate to welcome back Smith through social media after the agreement was sealed, as indicated by Bleacher Report.

The former CBA scoring champion is once again expected to provide the Cavs a much-need bench offensive support that he had been well-known throughout his entire career.
