"I actually think that Hong Kong will probably be the leading city in the world for electric cars," Musk said. "It's going to be really a leading light because I think it will actually have more EVs per capita than any other city."

Musk was a special guest at Hong Kong's StarmeupHK Festival this week.

There are more than 4,000 electric vehicles running on the streets of Hong Kong, and more than half of those are the Tesla Model S. In 2015, the company sold 2,221 Model S Sedans in the island.

There are 42 superchargers in the city and 75 destination chargers. Musk said that this makes Hong Kong the city with the highest density of rapidly spreading charging stations.

"Hong Kong is a beacon city for electric vehicles, [it can] serve as an example to the rest of the world on what to do,"  he noted.

Registered EVs in the city increased by 270 percent between 2014 and 2015. Musk thanked the "excellent government policies" in the city  that are more supportive than what the company is experiencing in mainland China.

The Tesla CEO also confirmed that its latest Model X will be making its debut in Hong Kong later this year along with a large service center. He added that Tesla will bring charging solutions first to Hong Kong before introducing them anywhere else in the world.
