Most video game titles today have an average shelf life of about three to five years and after that the developers just forgets about it and cash in on a new game. In the case of Diablo 2, it appears that Blizzard remains steadfast and dedicated to one of its most successful video game title that helped revolutionize the third-person RPG genre.

The new patch dubbed version 1.14a aims to make the Diablo 2 compatible with newer operating systems. While some video game websites claim that this might be the last patch for the 16-year old game, there are indications showing that Blizzard is aiming to release more patches in the future.

In a statement, Blizzard wrote, "This update focuses on system glitches introduced by modern operating systems. Included with the update is a shiny new installer for OSX. We've also begun working to improve our cheat-detection and hack-prevention capabilities."

Blizzard claims that there is still a large Diablo 2 community around the world.

According to Ars Technica, the latest Diablo 2 patch was released a couple of months after Blizzard posted a job opening for a senior software engineer position. The main objective of the job posting is to create a team in order to continue the maintenance effort for games like Diablo 2, Starcraft, and Warcraft III.

Video game enthusiasts and critics alike have praised Blizzard for its efforts to maintain this video game titles despite the fact that it has a lot of new games to worry about.
