An 18-year-old daredevil scaled the 1,380 feet-high Jin Mao Tower in Shanghai, because... well, just for fun.

Followers of German roofer Andrej Ciesielski already know that he climbed the Jin Mao Tower in Shanghai in February this year, but it was only revealed yesterday that the Ciesielski and two of his friends with him during the nauseating climb were detained by the police.

Ciesielski and two of his friends were able to sneak past the tower's security guards. The Jin Mao Tower is Shanghai's third tallest building and China's eight-tallest.

Police received reports from nearby building's office workers that three people were on the spire of the Tower.

"Some people from the Shanghai World Financial Centre saw us and reported us to the police. We only stayed for 10 minutes at the top of the ladder to avoid police but when we entered the lobby the police was already there," Ciesielski said.

The three adrenaline junkies were taken to the police station, but was released after seven hours without any penalties.

"I wasn't scared of climbing, only of getting caught," Ciesielski added.

Going up

According to Ciesielski, this is their third attempt to climb the tower.

"We didn't think we'd ever make it to the top. We took the elevator to the top floor, but we were seen on security cameras, and pretended we had got lost going to the restaurant," Ciesielski said.

Building staff showed them to the proper way, but they returned and got through to the machine room of the building.

"We managed to find an open window and climbed onto the outside of the building, where we had to climb up the side for about 50 metres (164ft) until we reached the spire," he said.

Ciesielski said that he is now done with Shanghai and will move on to other cities. He recently climbed buildings in Hong Kong.

Ciesielski is known for "roofing" or climbing to the top of tall structures to take photos. He was banned from entering Egypt for climbing the Great Pyramid of Giza.
