Driving along China’s Grass Skyline Not Free Anymore

China Issues New, Hard-to-forge Yuan Notes

Driving along one of China’s most scenic roads will cost tourists and sightseers more than just fuel now, as a local government has begun charging an amount for every vehicle that enters it, reports say.

Zhangbei Grassland Highway, located in the city of Zhangjiakou in Hebei province in north China, is a popular road due to the beautiful scenery that can be viewed while driving through its length of 132 km, reports CRIEnglish. Earlier, tourists were able to drive through it without paying any form of entrance fee, but the local government started charging 50 yuan (about USD $7.69) on April 30, reported Beijing News.

Also known as the “grass skyline,” the road was built in 2012, but only gained much fame after tourists started posting photos of its scenic view in two years later, in 2014.

Over the years, millions of tourists have seen the breathtaking views, which featured grassy lands that meet a clear blue sky, hills, valleys, and terraced farm lands. The summer of 2014 saw more than 220,000 visitors going through the road, with about 6,000 as the highest number of visitors in a day.

Last year, the government consulted the public if charging 80 yuan ($12.30) will be okay. However, because this plan received much criticism, it was canceled in favor of the current rate.

A Sight to Sore the Eyes

Meanwhile, in another part of Hebei province, a tourist was able to capture a video of a man riding a cart – pulled by a dog.

The video, filmed in Baoding in Hebei, featured a man who was riding a small wooden cart that was being pulled by one dog, reports Daily Mail. The dog was attached to the cart via a set of reins.

The man was apparently at ease while he chatted with the motorists who took the video. The dog, however, was clearly struggling to pull his relaxed owner, who was holding a whip but appeared to be not using it, through the street.

The video was first published online on April 30. Check it out below.
