Police in Shanghai apprehended a man for driving a race car down a public road on Thursday morning.

The man was driving a specialized type of vehicle that is banned on public roads, according to Shanghai Daily. He is believed to be a company worker who was taking the race car to Broad Auto Theme Park, a parking site.

Police saw the car cruising along Houtan Road in Pudong New Area and chased the driver, ultimately pulling him over at Guozhan Road. Police inspected the car and found that the steering wheel was relocated to the right-hand side of the car. They also found that it had repositioned oil and water tanks.

“It’s very dangerous to have such a car driving on a regular street,” a policeman said. “It’s like having a walking bomb on the road.”

Aside from driving a car prohibited from public roads, the driver had another violation as well. Police said the driver was wearing slippers while he was driving the race car. Using slippers while driving raises risks, police said.

The driver, named Feng, in his defense, said that he only took a detour as the road he was allowed to drive on was temporarily closed.

Also, the race car did not have a license plate.

“It doesn’t have a plate, Feng responded when asked if the car was registered. “It’s a race car.”

Feng told the Shanghai television station that the car should not have been on the road, adding that the auto theme park where he was taking it to is nearby.

Police said Feng will lose all of his 12 penalty points, and his driving will license be revoked. He has also been fined 200 yuan (USD $30) for driving a plateless car.

Meanwhile, the police have confiscated the vehicle and said it will only be released to its owner once the legal procedures have been completed.
