Earlier this year, wireless network provider AT&T announced three new DirecTV streaming options. These are DirecTV Mobile, DirecTV Now, and DirecTV Preview. These streaming services are aimed to rival the Internet TV plans offered by competitors. Now, AT&T is upgrading its streaming services through the acquisition of Quickplay Media, a company that delivers over-the-top and TV Everywhere streaming services.

With this latest acquisition, AT&T is planning to expand its streaming services by delivering video content almost anywhere and to several platforms. AT&T has been using Quickplay Media's platform to power its U-verse TV Everywhere service. This means that the two companies are already familiar with each other product, a unique advantage that will ease the impending integration.

The acquisition will transfer the ownership of Quickplay Media to AT&T from current owner Madison Dearborn Partners. Additionally, as part of the terms, AT&T will keep Quickplay Media's 350 employees.

In a statement, Quickplay founder and chief executive officer Wayne Purbo said, "We've spent more than a decade developing an advanced technology and service platform that can deliver premium video content to any device and over any network."

Purbo revealed that the services provided by Quickplay are highly automated and scalable. Aside from AT&T, Quickplay is also providing services to Samsung, Verizon, Accuweather, and other prominent tech companies. The recent acquisition by AT&T will not affect Quickplay's current customer base since both companies have made it clear that the latter will continue to provide services to all of its customers.

The terms of the acquisition have not been disclosed. AT&T has expressed its intention to close the deal by the middle of the year, provided all regulations and standards are met.

Meanwhile, the new DirecTV streaming plans unveiled by AT&T will be rolled out some time in the fourth quarter of the year.
