Sony's flagship gaming console, the PlayStation 4, has sold more than 40 million units, the company revealed on Thursday, May 26. The latest sales statistics highlights the massive demand for the console which is considered by many market analysts as Sony's fastest growing unit.

In a press release acquired by BGR, Sony stated, "We are truly grateful for the enormous support from our fans and partners across the globe, which helped us achieve this significant milestone in such a short span of time."

Sony Interactive Entertainment, the company's video game and network-services division, said that the console reached the milestone on May 22. Compared to other consoles released by Sony, the PlayStation 4 is clearly outpacing all of its predecessors, including the PlayStation 2 which was a massive sales success.

Sony released the PlayStation 4 back in November 2013. Since then, the console has managed to surpass its rivals, including the Xbox One from Microsoft and the Wii U from Nintendo. To take advantage of the massive hype and success of the PlayStation 4, Sony is planning to ship another 20 million units of the console before the end of this year.

Sony has several interests and divisions in the tech industry. However, the company's video game business is considered by many market analysts to be its core growth engine. In this current fiscal year, which started April, analysts project that the Sony's video game division will contribute a massive operating profit of about $1.22 billion, according to The Wall Street Journal.

Aside from its highly successful gaming console, Sony is also receiving loads of revenue from its highly lucrative network services. This includes online video game subscription and the company's cloud-based streaming services.

Many analysts believe that the unit's current growth will most likely accelerate with the launch of Sony's own virtual reality headset, the PlayStation VR, in October.
