Tumblr is launching a live video service this week, a new feature for the blogging platform that could compete with Facebook Live, Twitter's Periscope, and Amazon's Twitch.

In a blog post, the company announced that they will officially uncork the new update on Tuesday, June 21st. However, the company did not release more details as to whether the forthcoming streaming service will be launched under a third-party app or locally.

Based on Tumblr's previous blog posts, it appears that the company has huge plans for live video. a schedule of the service's upcoming coverage has been posted to promote what followers can expect. The list includes a live broadcast from the surface of the Mars, a basketball tutorial with a Harlem Globetrotter, and a Q&A chat with Adam J. Kurtz.

The company also dropped a cryptic tease, saying that they "will inflate a very big thing in a very small room," as part of their live upcoming broadcasts.

Since it launched in 2007, Tumblr has been a popular social media channel. The platform has generated over 550 million users monthly and has hosted over 300 million blog sites.

While it holds a strong following among online users, the company is still struggling to compete.

This latest move will mark as one of the company's attempts to generate more revenue, popularity, and user engagement after being acquired by Yahoo in 2013. In 2014, the company failed to hit the $100 million annual sales goal.

The coming weeks are crucial and will determine whether live video is the right way to go for Tumblr.

Snapchat is doing the same after tweaking its Discover feature to attract more publishers and generate more ad content.

While details are scarce about live video, there are rumors that Tumblr is also planning to announce a bigger strategy for real-time content.
