(Photo : Weibo) About 16,000 Wintek workers went on strike crying for unjust holiday bonuses and social security issues in the company.

Taiwan-based Wintek, a touch-screen manufacturing company, has experienced the biggest work stoppage for this year after around 16,000 of its workers went on strike.

The company’s workers were infuriated after receiving holiday benefits from Wintek, reported Xinhua. The report went on saying that there were about 300 employees who had been fired from their jobs.

Meanwhile, a Wintek executive who spoke in condition of anonymity he was not authorized to speak for the company’s behalf said the strike started at Dongguan Masstop Liquid Crystal Display on Tuesday. The subsidiary arm holds around 8,000 workers. The executive said the strike continued to spread in Wintek Technology on Wednesday.

The company’s production was not deemed affected and the executive did not mention how many people participated during the strike which ended Wednesday and Thursday.

The factory of Wintek in Suzhou has been listed on the 2014 suppliers of Apple Inc. for its iPhone and iPad products. However, it was not clear who the main clients of the company were.

A spokesperson for the California-based company said they would not comment on the matter as far as suppliers beyond their list were concerned.

On the other hand, an expelled company employee told Hong Kong Cable TV the reason behind the strike of the workers against the company. The person who requested anonymity said unemployment premiums and social security issues were the main reasons behind the infuriated workers’ strike.

The same reason was seen after the biggest strike in decades took place recently in April when about 40,000 workers went on strike. This resulted to stoppages in producing shoes that supplies Adidas, Nike and other major sport footwear brands.

Xinhua reported citing workers involved in the Wintek strike that they were dismayed after the company promised cash bonuses during holidays that would commensurate half of their monthly paychecks. The report went on citing a worker identified Zhang saying they were only given a banana and a piece of chicken for the Mid-Autumn Festival. Zhang said they were also given 100 yuan.

The workers resumed their jobs after Wintek authorities explained that the bonus they received reflected the performance of the company so far this year.

Last year, Wintek workers were able to get 700 yuan bonus and a box of mooncakes.
