US President-elect Donald Trump has reportedly received only two classified intelligence briefings after he was elected but has since declined other opportunities to catch up on global developments and emerging security threats.

This has prompted some people to comment that Trump has lots of "catching up to do" with regard to national security matters. He is said to have received an initial intelligence briefing a few days after he won the election and the second one on Tuesday.

According to former and current US officials, the two briefings he has received are noticeably lower than what his predecessors received in the same period.

However, his Vice-President elect Mike Pence is said to be receiving intelligence briefings almost every day since the election results was announced.

Chairman of the House Intelligence Committee Devin Nunes has however defended Trump, saying that Trump's talks with world leaders since the election are a clear indication that the President-elect is paying close attention to security matters.

"National security is Donald Trump's number one priority, and I think he is taking it very seriously," Nunes, who is also a senior member of Trump's transition team, said.

According to Michael Morrel, a former deputy CIA Director, previous president-elect used the intelligence briefings that were offered to them during the transition to study the national security issues that they would be facing.

"The President-elect is missing out on a golden opportunity to learn about the national security threats and challenges facing our nation,"  Morrel, who also supported Clinton during the election, said.

During his campaign, Trump constantly displayed his skepticism of the US intelligence agencies.
