OS X Yosemite, Updated iWork Available Today

OS X Yosemite

Apple has released OS X Yosemite and update iWork today for free to all OS X users.

Apple Inc.  has released OS X Yosemite and the updated iWork suite today at their event in Cupertino. The new update to OS X and iWork is available to download for free - following Apple's move last year away from paid updates on desktop.

OS X Yosemite was covered at Apple's WWDC event in June, where the company announced a revamped interface. Craig Federighi, the Senior Vice President of Software Engineering, ran through some of the biggest features:

- Redesigned Interface - OS X Yosemite has a new flat interface to complement iOS7 (now iOS8), with new redesigned Apple OS X apps. Windows and text have all been redesigned to fit the new flat interface.

- Spotlight - Apple has redesigned their spotlight search-bar to feature results from the web and other devices, alongside locationization controls. This makes searching on Spotlight faster and smarter.

- Continuity - Apple has made it easier than ever to move from Mac OS and iOS, using iCloud. This allows users to answer SMS and phone calls on OS X when connected to an iPhone, and use the iPhone's data when out and about to connect to the Web on OS X.

- Handoff - Following on from Continuity, Handoff allows users to move from iOS to OS X (and vise versa) without losing any work. This new feature will work on Apple's own apps to begin with, spreading to other third party applications soon.

- iCloud Drive - There is now a cloud storage service for Apple's products, competing with Google Drive, Dropbox and other alternatives. This service will be available on Mac OS, iOS and Windows, but not Android at launch.

All of these new updates, alongside the new rework of iWork, should be enough for users. It is free, after all.
