Google Fit Available For Android, Alternative to Apple Health

Apple (AAPL) has made a big commitment in health and fitness this past year, and Google (GOOG) is looking to follow with their own health app, named Google Fit.

Google Fit will plug into other health and fitness apps, providing the services with data. The main app will be used to give statistics and challenges to the user, based on their stats from Google Fit and other apps.

Similar to HealthKit, Google has built its own APK available to developers. This will allow it to tap into Google Fit, use some of the data and add its own. Google has said it's on tight security to make sure users personal health data stays on the phone.

Google Fit already works with all current Android Wear devices, giving it a steady market of wearables. Users will also be able to access Google Fit from smartphone or tablet, letting them check their health profile - this feature is also available on the Web.

The standalone app will offer information on walking, running and cycling. Users will be able to track this data daily, weekly or monthly. Depending on the device's sensors, users may be able to check heart rate and other health metrics.

Apple's Health has had a rocky start on iOS8, with not a lot of users investing time into the app. Developers have also been a bit slow to adopt HealthKit on iOS8, leading to speculation this might be another PassBook issue - where Apple cannot find support.

Google Fit is a smaller move by Google, meaning if it fails, it will not cost the company as much as it would Apple. Google is still hoping to achieve some results from Google Fit, and hopefully this will make the Android Wear OS more useful for fitness fanatics.
