Google Fiber to Announce Deployment In Atlanta

(Photo : Reuters) The construction of the Google Fiber project in Austin, Texas is causing a lot of troubles for residents of the city.

Google Fiber is looking into a number of potential cities to convert, but so far has held off any formal announcements.

One of those cities is Atlanta and Google has scheduled a press conference on Tuesday, claiming attendees will "learn more about what's in store for the people of Metro Atlanta."

Atlanta is currently one of the most advanced places in the U.S. when it comes to internet adoption and technology, but the urban city lacks real broadband competition.

AT&T announced three months ago a new gigabit project, but it looks to be only available for high-end developments and deployment has been slow.

Google Fiber could speed things up with added competition, the same way it did in Austin, Texas. Google works with city leaders to make sure deployment will be smooth as butter before spending any money on fiber optic lines.

Google is looking at several parts of Atlanta for fiber deployment, including Atlanta, Avondale Estates, Brookhaven, College Park, Decatur, East Point, Hapeville, Sandy Springs and Smyrna.

Other cities reportedly in the running for fiber deployment include Nashville, Charlotte and Raleigh-Durham. Palo Alto, California, the home of Apple, could also be in the running for high-speed fiber optic broadband.

Google already maintains service in Austin, Kansas City and Provo, Utah, but wants more deployment in 2015. Google even wrote an open letter to the Federal Communications Commission (FCC), claiming Title II reclassification on broadband providers would initiate more Google Fiber deployment.

Normally, it takes a few months for work to get underway and then a full two years for fiber to come to many neighborhoods since Google works on a popularity scope.

This might be part of the reason why Google is working on even more deployments in 2015 due to the slow nature of putting down fiber optic broadband.
