New Jersey Governor Chris Christie has created a political action committee (PAC) that will let him begin seeking funding for a possible run for the White House next year.

Documents to form Christie's committee, known as Leadership Matters for America, were filed Friday before he delivered a speech before the Iowa Freedom Summit, a conservative assembly in Des Moines. The committee will allow the governor to work on the core operation of a campaign, to start hiring staffers and to begin traveling across the nation before making his final decision.

Christie's committee follows a similar organization formed by former Florida Governor Jeb Bush, who spurred race to look for donors. A former official close to Christie, Matt Mowers, who is quitting as chief of the Republican Party in New Hampshire before January ends, will lead the committee.

The organization's mission statement posted on its website included causes that Christie advocated, which he mentioned on Saturday in his speech in Iowa before an audience of conservative activists.

Leadership Matters for America's mission statement said it wanted to reestablish America's presence in world affairs, reform federal spending on "entitlements," and see to it that every child, no matter where he or she lives, will have quality education.

In last couple of months, Christie has met court donors, delivered briefings on foreign policy and took several visits to early-voting states where he fell short of declaring himself "a candidate."

A former federal prosecutor, Christie decided against challenging President Barack Obama three years ago and buckled down to building the foundations for a 2016 campaign after nailing a second term as governor of the Democrat-dominated Garden State in 2013.
