Tesla Model S has been designed to run in autopilot mode, and this feature has already been available to people for 6 months now. It is said that Audi, Mercedes and General Motors are also going to offer cars with autonomous highway driving capabilities.

Tesla's Autopilot feature uses mounted cameras, radar and ultrasonic sensors that helps read road markings and obstacles (near and far). This prevents the car from bumping into other vehicles as it moves in its own lane, but it requires some human intervention when it comes to complex driving situations.

As far as autonomous technology is concerned, this feature is quite basic in functionality, yet it can put an end to thousands of highway fatalities that occur in the United States every year. The company says that collisions will not disappear completely, but it will help reduce the chances of accidents due to drunk, sleepy and mobile phone using drivers.

A video with Tesla (Tessy) on the road shows the car cruising down the highway, while the driver named Joshua Brown sits with his hands off the steering wheel. He is listening to Malcolm Gladwell audiobook and enjoying, and suddenly, a huge truck comes across and heads straight towards the Model S car. Brown says in the video description that he was not watching the road at all.

The car makes him aware of the danger by alerting him with an "immediately take over" warning chime, and the car quickly moved right to avoid collision. Brown came out safe and the car unscathed. The immediate action taken by the car's autopilot function saved Brown's life.

Tesla's CEO Elon Musk said that they will bring the car to India; however, as of now, due to many reasons, it is guessed that it will not probably be a huge success in the country.
