Tony Fadell has announced that he is leaving Nest, the home automation company which he established and sold to Google. Fadell said that he will serve as an advisor to Larry Page and Google's parent company, Alphabet, but he will no longer be involved with Nest.

Aside from his new role as advisor to Page and Google, Fadell is yet to lay out his plans for the future. According to The Verge, now that Fadell is out of Nest, he will be focusing more on the start-up companies that he funds, including Actev, Impossible Foods, Phononic, and Mousera.

In a statement posted on the Nest official blog, Fadell wrote, "Considering that when Nest launched less than five years ago, connected home sections didn't exist at retail, it isn't an understatement to say that the connected home went mainstream because of Nest."

The drama enfolding Nest surfaced after the company acquired Dropcam, a security camera manufacturer which was eventually rebranded into the Nest Cam. The acquisition cost Nest a hefty $555 million. Following the buyout, Dropcam Chief Executive Officer Greg Duffy labeled the acquisition as a "mistake."

Before founding Nest, Fadell was a prolific Apple executive and a well-known disciple of Steve Jobs. Fadell is also known as the godfather of the iPod. He also played a key role in the development of the iPhone.

When Fadell joined Google in 2014, tech analysts described the move as Google's attempt to tap into Apple's excellent track record in hardware development. However, Fadell's tenure at Google has been a rocky one. One reason cited by experts to explain Fadell's problems at Google is that the company's policy of being open and experimental is a contrast to his experience at Apple, which has a more rigid and secretive culture.

Meanwhile, former Motorola Mobility executive Marwan Fawaz will step in as the new chief executive officer of Nest following Fadell's exit. Fawaz also served as CEO of Motorola Home.
