He played college basketball at the Providence Friars in the NCAA Division I from 2010 to 2014, where he played 130 games. He averaged 15.2 points, 2.8 rebounds, 3.0 assists, 0.9 steal and 0.1 shot block per game during his tenure with the collegiate squad.

Cotton was undrafted in the 2014 NBA draft but was acquired by the Austin Spurs as an affiliate player in November 2014. He was named to the Futures All-Star team for the 2015 NBA D-League All-Star Game on February, 2015.

He had a short stint with the Utah Jazz, playing a total of 15 official games, averaging 5.3 points, 1.2 rebounds, 1.0 assist and 0.3 steal in 10.6 minutes of action per game. He was waived by the club on October 2015.

Cotton was reacquired by the Austin Spurs following his stint with the Jazz. He was later noticed by the Phoenix Suns, who signed him to play for the team, where he posted statistics of 1.3 points and 1 assist in 11 minutes of playing time on his total three official games.

Recently, Xinjiang reportedly brought former NBA three-time slam dunk champion Nate Robinson to China for an individual work-out with the team. However, the former NBA journeyman failed to impress the coaching staff of the Flying Tigers and is said to have been sent back to the United States.
