Motorola has reportedly recalled all of AT&T's Nexus 6 stock after finding a major software bug on the smartphone affecting most customers.

The recall is the first of its kind for a Nexus device. Motorola has been offering several updates to curb early issues with the new Android 5.0 Lollipop, the newest operating system update released by Google.

Reports say the Nexus 6 screen goes black and the phone is rendered useless thereafter. It is unclear what the issue specifically is with AT&T units and why other Nexus 6 devices are not seeing this issue crop up.

AT&T has added some modifications to the pure Nexus experience. Customers are stuck on an AT&T only SIM, which cannot tether without the correct plan. AT&T has also installed custom ringtones and other special features, which may have caused the recall.

Most Nexus customers buy the smartphone for the pure Android experience. Google rarely ships devices with no modifications, considering most manufacturers add their own skins or services, to make the smartphone custom to the provider.

Carriers also like to make customizations in the U.S., including adding branding to the back and front of the device and adding services.

The Nexus 6 is still available on the Motorola and Google store off contract. This is the best place to buy the Nexus 6 for anyone who wants a pure experience. The off-contract Nexus 6 also allows SIMs from other carriers to be added.

Google's Nexus 6 is the first Nexus smartphone to be price similar to other high-end devices, at $649 off contract. The device has a QHD display, Snapdragon 805 processor, 3GB of RAM and 32GB of storage, similar to most high-end devices.

AT&T should have the Nexus 6 back in stock next week. The carrier has made no comment on the possible issues inflicting the Nexus 6 from its own customizations.
